In het lustrumjaar 1976 ontstaat het idee om ter nagedachtenis aan de oprichter van het Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium prof.dr. [[Holst G. | G. Holst]], die ook een belangrijke rol speelde bij de oprichting van de THE, een lezing te organiseren waarin een prominente wetenschapper zijn licht zal laten schijnen over ontwikkelingen in een bepaald wetenschapsgebied. Met steun van het Natlab ontstaat zo het begin van een traditie. Er wordt afgesproken dat de lezingen in het licht zullen staan van een typisch ''Holstiaans ''thema: de ontwikkeling van de toegepaste wetenschappen, in het bijzonder de wiskunde en de natuurwetenschappen, en het belang daarvan voor industrie en samenleving. De organisatie van de lezingen komt in handen van een Holstcommissie. Rode draad in de samenstelling daarvan vormen de opeenvolgende directeuren van het Natlab (later Philips Research) en de rectoren van de TU/e. Aan het begin van de jaren tachtig maken er gedurende korte tijd ook Tilburgse hoogleraren deel van uit, zoals de socioloog prof.dr. Anton Zijderveld en de jurist prof.dr. Ernst Hirsch Ballin. De lijst van Holstsprekers laat zien dat de organisatoren er in geslaagd zijn om een stoet van aansprekende namen naar Eindhoven te halen, onder wie Nobelprijswinnaars als Ilya Prigogine, Philippe de Gennes, Arno Penzias en Alan Heeger. Andere grote namen zijn internetgoeroe Nicholas Negroponte van het Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John Maddox van het blad ''Nature ''en de genoomonderzoeker Craig Venter. De laatste jaren wordt de Holst lezing voorafgegaan door een symposium gewijd aan de onderzoeksdiscipline waarin de Holstspreker actief is. Sinds 2003 ontvangen de sprekers naast een honorarium ook de door kunstenaar Jos Reniers ontworpen bronzen Holstpenning.

In april 1977 schrijft Holstcommissielid prof.dr. H.B.G. Casimir een brief aan de beroemde Duitse fysicus prof. dr. Carl von Weiszäcker, die hij kende uit de tijd dat ze beiden in Kopenhagen in de kring van Niels Bohr verkeerden. Casimir polst hem als spreker voor de eerste Holstlezing, maar ''Lieber Weiszäcker ''heeft geen tijd en zal pas twee jaar later komen. Dan wordt Dr. A.E. Pannenborg, lid van de Raad van Bestuur van Philips en voormalig directeur van het Natlab, in stelling gebracht. Hij verkeert in kringen van de Club van Rome en nodigt de oprichter van die vermaarde duurzaamheidsdenktank, dr. Alexander King, uit om in december de Holstlezing te houden. De Club van Rome werd bekend door het rapport ''Grenzen aan de groei. ''King accepteert en er wordt rond zijn komst een serie seminars en paneldiscussies voorbereid met wereldomvattende thema’s als ''the state of the planet ''en ''science policy''. Op de gastenlijst prijken namen als Van der Grinten (Staatsmijnen), Beek (Unilever), Lardinois (Rabobank), Wagner (voorheen Shell) en Trip (minister van Wetenschapsbeleid). Het worden van 13 tot en met 15 december voor de 68-jarige King drie drukke dagen in Eindhoven. Hij verblijft in Hotel Cocagne dat hij kent van eerdere bezoeken. De lezing wordt een succes en dat geldt ook voor het Holstdiner dat in Rôtisserie de Kempen ter ere van de spreker wordt aangericht. In een bedankbrief van 19 december uit zijn woonplaats Parijs deelt King mee dat hij het bezoek ''useful and pleasant ''vond. “I think that it is very important that universities should take an outgoing approach to the community and the events of last week were an excellent example of this.” King bedankt rector magnificus prof.dr. P. van der Leeden voor het genereuze bedrag dat hij voor zijn lezing ontving. “You may be interested to know that on Friday morning my wife and I spent part of it on buying a carpet for our dining room here in Paris, so that part of the money remains in Eindhoven and we have a permanent souvenir here of our happy time with you.”
